People often ask us when the best time is to visit Playa Chiquita. The honest answer: it depends on the trip you want.
The southern Caribbean of Costa Rica has its own rhythm — different from the Pacific coast, different from the central valley. The rains, the surf, the wildlife and even the locals’ pace shift through the year. Here’s what we tell guests, by season.
December to April — The “Dry” Season
These months get the lion’s share of bookings, and for good reason. Rain falls in shorter bursts, the sea is calmer, and the days settle into bright, golden afternoons.
- Best for: beach days, snorkeling at Cahuita reef, families
- What to expect: warmer mornings, breezy afternoons, occasional showers
- Watch out for: holiday crowds in late December and Easter week
If you want the postcard version of the Caribbean — palm trees, blue water, lazy hammock afternoons — this is your window.
May and June — A Quiet Sweet Spot
Many travelers skip these months thinking they’re “rainy season.” In reality, May and June on the Caribbean side are some of our favorite weeks of the year.
The forest is bright green after the first rains, the prices come down, and you’ll often have entire stretches of beach to yourself. Showers tend to roll through in the late afternoon and clear by sunset.
This is the season for the slow traveler — the one who reads on the terrace, takes a yoga class, and doesn’t mind rearranging plans around a passing storm.
July and August — The Surprise Window
A lesser-known quirk of this coast: there’s a “mini dry season” in July and August. While the Pacific coast is wet, the Caribbean side often gets two of the sunniest months of the year.
- Best for: surfers, families with kids on summer break, divers
- Wildlife: sea turtle nesting season at nearby beaches
- Tip: book early — Europeans on summer holiday discovered this years ago
September and October — Green Season, Honestly
These are the wettest months on the Caribbean side. We’re not going to pretend otherwise.
But for guests who choose them on purpose, September and October offer a deeply different experience: the rainforest is at its loudest and most alive, waterfalls run full, and the lodge feels almost intimate. We close briefly for maintenance some years — check directly with us before booking.
November — The Reset
The rains taper. The sea calms. The Christmas season hasn’t arrived yet. November is a quietly excellent month — fewer guests, lower rates, and the jungle waking up after the wet season.
So When Should You Come?
