12 Things to Do in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

January 15, 2025 · 3 min read · By Namuwoki Lodge

Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast is unlike anywhere else in the country. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and the surrounding area offer a laid-back, reggae-infused atmosphere with incredible biodiversity, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage.

Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventure seeker, or simply looking to unwind on white-sand beaches, here are the best things to do near Puerto Viejo.

1. Relax on Playa Chiquita

One of the coast’s most beautiful beaches sits just a short walk from the main road. Unlike the busier town beaches, Playa Chiquita offers calm turquoise waters, natural rock pools, and a peaceful setting surrounded by jungle. It’s the kind of place where you can spend an entire afternoon with a book and barely see another soul.

2. Explore Cahuita National Park

This coastal park combines white-sand beaches with lush rainforest trails. Walk the shoreline path and spot howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, sloths, and colorful toucans — all within a few hours. The park entrance is by voluntary donation, making it one of the best-value nature experiences in all of Costa Rica.

3. Snorkel the Coral Reefs

The Caribbean side is home to Costa Rica’s most vibrant coral reefs. Guided snorkeling tours take you to spots where you’ll see tropical fish, sea urchins, and soft corals in crystal-clear water. The reefs near Cahuita and Manzanillo are especially rewarding.

4. Visit the Bribri Indigenous Reserve

One of the most meaningful experiences on the coast is a visit to the Bribri community. Learn about their traditional knowledge of medicinal plants, cacao cultivation, and a way of life that has endured for centuries. Many tours include a hands-on chocolate-making workshop.

5. Surf the Caribbean Waves

Puerto Viejo’s famous Salsa Brava wave draws experienced surfers from around the world, while calmer breaks at Cocles and Playa Chiquita are perfect for beginners. Board rentals and lessons are easy to find along the main strip.

6. Go White Water Rafting

The Pacuare River, roughly two hours from Puerto Viejo, is considered one of the top rafting rivers in the world. Class III–IV rapids wind through dense jungle gorges — an unforgettable day trip that most lodges can arrange for you.

7. Try Zip-lining Through the Canopy

Soar above the treetops and get a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest. Several canopy tour operators near Puerto Viejo offer zip-line circuits that range from family-friendly to adrenaline-pumping.

8. Walk Through Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge

This protected reserve stretches along the coast south of Puerto Viejo. It’s a quieter alternative to Cahuita with excellent snorkeling, mangrove kayaking, and some of the region’s best-preserved coral reefs. From March to July, you might even witness sea turtles nesting on the beach.

9. Watch Wildlife at the Lodge

You don’t always have to leave your accommodation to spot wildlife. Agoutis, toucans, sloths, and howler monkeys are regular visitors to the gardens and pathways of lodges along the Playa Chiquita road. Mornings and late afternoons are the best times for sightings.

10. Taste Caribbean Cuisine

The food scene in Puerto Viejo blends Caribbean, Costa Rican, and international influences. Try a traditional rice-and-beans plate cooked in coconut milk, fresh ceviche, or jerk-spiced seafood. Many restaurants along the coast source ingredients from local farms and sustainable fisheries.

11. Book a Jungle Spa Treatment

There’s something special about getting a massage surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest. Several wellness spots along the coast offer treatments using local ingredients — cacao, coconut oil, and volcanic hot stones.

12. Ride Horseback Along the Beach

Guided horseback rides take you through jungle trails and along Caribbean beaches. It’s a peaceful way to explore the landscape and a favorite activity for families.

Plan Your Stay

Puerto Viejo and Playa Chiquita reward travelers who take their time. A 4–5 night stay gives you enough room to balance adventures with lazy beach mornings and long dinners. Many visitors end up wishing they’d booked a few extra nights.
